Sober College provides a customized learning experience using accredited curriculum, individualized and group instruction and cutting-edge technology. Our expert staff supports and guides each student on their individualized academic journey and prepares them for long-term success. We offer high school completion, vocational training and college courses, both traditional and online. Whether you are in need of a GED or a Master's degree, Sober College can help you achieve your goals.
Step 1: Educational Assessment
Upon arrival at Sober College, each student meets with our staff, who create the Academic Plan that guides students through their stay at Sober College. Included in this assessment is an evaluation of transcripts to determine exactly what courses the student has completed and what courses need to be taken to reach the student's goals. Additional educational assessments are available to measure skills such as reading comprehension and college readiness or look for any undiagnosed learning disabilities.
Step 2: Academic Placement
Once the Academic Plan has been created, the student is enrolled in the course(s) to complete the diploma, certification or degree of choice. Much consideration is given to ensure that students are moving on a path that is not only engaging but also goal-oriented. It is our aim at Sober College to help students find a path that leads to higher learning or a fulfilling career. Students have many options from Addiction Studies to Veterinary Medecine. Special accomodations are available for students who arrive with material from schools not affiliated with Sober College and every precaution is taken to guarantee that the work completed at Sober College will transfer to the school of the student's choice upon discharge.
Step 3: Professional Guidance
Support is a crucial aspect of academics for students in recovery. Melissa Jennewein, our Academic Coach, actively coaches students through the completion of their assignments, monitors students' progress, helps students develop organizational skills, and enforces rules and structure - directly addressing behavior issues as they arise. Michelle Livecchi, our Lead Teacher, teaches groups and tutors students on an individual basis. Catering to each student's individual needs, she is devoted to guiding every student toward his/her individual dreams and ensures the 12 steps of recovery are integrated smoothly into the educational environment of The Learning Center.
Step 4: Re-Integration to the Real World
It is our priority that student's have a smooth transition from the safe, structured community of Sober College to the larger, unfamiliar world of colleges, universities and the job market. When they show readiness, students will be assisted in transferring to community or state colleges, developing resumes and applying for jobs or taken off-site to complete internships, volunteer work or vocational training. After completing the recommended one-year program, many students become part-time or full-time employees of Sober College which affords them yet another opportunity to build a foundation for future success.
